PappaRich Ultimo

PappaRich is described as the best Malaysian food, and a laid-back chain with stylish decor, doling out traditional Malaysian meals, drinks and desserts.

We’ve visited PappaRich in Ultimo 8 times so far, we can safely say that the food is far from the best, the service way too laid back and the decor is outdated with everything falling apart around them.

Let’s start with ordering, we were seated at a dingy looking table that was unclean. We had to ask for cups of hot water to clean our cutlery as the cutlery still had food on them.

The water carafe placed on our table had unclear water and chips in the glass carafe. We assume it’s not fit for consumption and gave it a miss.

It was then very difficult to get anyone’s attention to order our food, ordering is done by number identification and we write down the numbers on a pad of paper left at the table.

I’m going to point out that it is absolutely pointless ordering entree, main and dessert from this place, as they do not get the concept. Every time we have ordered from PappaRich Ultimo our mains arrived first, entrees part way through eating mains and the drinks part way through mains.

The other common occurrence that has happened on 6 of the 8 occasions was that out of our table of 4 people, 3 people received their mains the last person did not receive any food until everyone else had nearly finished their food. Im talking 20 minutes to serve the last dish.

It’s quite common for an order to be taken, only for the wait staff to return to your table 5 minutes later to advise they have run out of something you ordered.

All dishes that we have ordered were overloaded with rice or noodles and had very little in the way of vegetables or other meat ingredients. One of the dishes (Pappa char koay teow) was supposed to be a prawn noodle dish, it contained a lot of noodles, small strands of vegetable and 2x prawns.

Our mock meat dish (Vegetarian fried mee hoon with curry mutton mock meat with egg) claims to be made from mushroom, it’s not. The mock meat is textured soy, while not bad tasting also not good for someone needing to avoid soy and being mislead. The mock meat was fridge cold, the noodles warm and there was no egg. Overall a very disappointing dish.

The only thing that PappaRich seems to have right is their tasty drinks. Barley Grass Jelly, Bandung and Lychee Grass Jelly were our favourites.

Mains are priced between $15.90 to $29, drinks are around the $7 mark and desserts are around $10. Four people typically cost $120. A lot of money for majority noodles or rice.

If you are wanting good food and a hassle-free night then do not come here. As already mentioned you are likely to experience food not cooked right, missing ingredients, poor service and to receive your food in whatever order they decide.

Now’s a good time to mention that the noodles in the seafood laksa were overcooked and slimy. Not worth the time, effort or money.
