While Budget Direct maybe sticking to their claim of being the back to back winner for 2017 and 2018 Money Magazine’s Award for Insurer of the year, it’s an award for being cheap, and we all know that you really only get what you pay for.
Like our two experiences with Budget Direct, they were not good. Our first experience was last year when we had Contents Insurance with Budget Direct, contents insured for $70,000.
Council had a burst water pipe outside our house, no one had noticed this for a while, yet we had a leak down our driveway and into our garage, we contacted Council who jumped on the job pretty quickly. Luckily our main living area was not on the ground floor.
Our garage had boxes of valuables in there as we had not long ago moved in and had not moved everything up the flight of stairs and unpacked yet. Our garage was about 3 inches deep in water, enough to damage electricals, photos, books, gardening equipment including 10 bags of potting mix, mulch.
At this point, we’d easily had lost over $8000 of insured contents. We called Budget Direct and made a claim, they were first of all responsive and advised us to write down everything we had lost and an estimated value and email it. So we did painfully over the following 2 days.
2 days after submitting our estimate, we then had a request for photos, I was angry that they did not ask for photos at the time we made the claim, I was lucky enough to take photos of most of the damage as proof before cleaning it up and throwing things out. 4 days down I was not exactly going to leave everything in water waiting for Budget Direct to get back to us.
Budget Direct took a further 2 weeks to get back to us, we had to chase them up on 3 occasions to find out what was happening. It turns out that they wanted to only cover $2100 of damage and then asked us to remove the potting mix/mulch off our claim so we can get it paid today. Additionally, they required me to take my notebook to a computer store to have it assessed. Funnily enough, it comes back assessed as water damaged.
I was not happy with the fact that they only wanted to cover $2100 of damage and then did not want to recognise the potting mix/mulch that was so obviously all awash and unusable. We settled on $2100 and left it at that. A few days later we cancelled our cover with them and moved to another Insurer.
Our second experience occurred last week when we contacted Budget Direct to provide Comprehensive Vehicle Insurance. First of all filled out the forms online, and were then notified to call Budget Direct with the quote number.
We contacted Budget Direct and were asked a number of questions, almost repeating over half of the quote we filled out. We were then told it needed to go to the underwriters and someone would be in contact with us in the next day. We waited 3 days and no one had called.
So we called again to find out what was going on, we were advised that the agent dealing with our Insurance quote was on another call and would call us back, it’s been another 4 days so far and still no one has called.
We have very little confidence with Budget Direct in paying out a claim, given the lack of response and run around we have received in the past. We’d recommend avoiding Budget Direct and taking your business elsewhere.
The irony of it all comes when we received an email 2 days ago asking for feedback and a review. So here you are Budget Direct, your new shiny review about our shitty experience with you.
While Budget Direct doesn’t insure Captain Risky, we imagine you shouldn’t insure your valuables with Captain Risky either.
