92 Thai located in Gosford had been around for over 10 years and was iconic for it’s authentic and traditional Thai dishes.
This all seems to have come to an end with the change of ownership last year. The new name is ’92 Chilli Basil Thai Restaurant’. The restaurant under new ownership seemed quiet and all reviews online were from the old days.
We decided to give 92 Chilli Basil Thai Restaurant a test and review.
Hair in the drinking glass, hair on the table, poor quality service and food and then told to ‘shut up you whinging..’
Upon arrival at 92 Chilli Basil Thai Restaurant, we sat down and started to read the menu. The restaurant was empty.
We could smell something like mothballs, something you should not smell in any restaurant. I then noticed a hair on the table. A glance over to the waitresses one was cleaning and the other playing on her phone.
When ready to order we were approached by a waitress, while taking our order she was rubbing her eyes. Really unprofessional. At this point, we were ready to walk out with zero confidence in the food or service.
First up was the Entree. Prawn wrapped in Potato Noodles deep fried. The sauce served with it was watered down honey. Chinese flavours, not Thai and very average in quality, not worth the $8.60.
We found a hair in the glass of Coke, so we left it to the side.
Next up Nasi Goreng, an Indonesian dish. Generous serving with 7 prawns, however, the prawns were stewed in with the rice rather than being cooked properly with a bit of char, the dish lacked traditional flavour and there was no chilli, the flavours were more like Chinese style fried rice, a major let down and not worth the $16.20
Next was the Honey Prawns, a light crunchy batter, but so much batter that there was more batter than prawn. Served with honey and imitation lemon, Chinese flavours and not Thai.
The total cost for 2x Honey Prawn, 1 Nasi Goreng, 1x Prawn wrapped in Potato Noodles and 3x Cans of Softdrink was $86. Probably the worst value for money we could imagine.
92 Chilli Basil Thai Restaurant is actually a Chinese Restaurant, not a Thai restaurant as they would have you believe, even the Thai dishes had Chinese flavour profiles, which is hugely disappointing.
The Star Buffet at the Leagues Club is all you can eat and would only cost $70.50 for three people including unlimited soft drink and was pretty much the same quality as 92 Chilli Basil Thai Restaurant.
One of the other advantages to simply going to the Star Buffet is that there is a better atmosphere, and usually no mothball smell.
We will not be returning to 92 Chilli Basil Thai Restaurant. It is too Chinese influenced and the Central Coast already has numerous Chinese restaurants with average quality food at high prices.
We have had a response from one of the employees at 92 Chilli Basil Thai Restaurant who really did not give a damn about the poor service or poor quality food, she said ‘shut up you whinging..’ and with attitude like that it’s why places like this will go out of business in no time at all.
Note: We do not work for or have any incentive to promote Star Buffet at Central Coast Leagues Club. The information and comparison provided is based on facts, research and experience.
